Livis undertook this high profile complex design and build project as Principle Contractor to construct a new extension to the station building in the footprint of an existing station carpark. The new build was to incorporate a ticket hall entrance, a fully functioning Station control room with mess facilities and in support of these works a new fully functioning communications system installed throughout the station to integrate the London Underground communications systems with the East London Line extensions and the First Capital Connect line into a single control room. The works were brought into use early to give the station an integrated communications system in time for the key opening on the new East London Line extension from Highbury & Islington to Dalston Junction despite the extremely tight timescales that had been set by the Client and the lost time due to the severe weather that occurred during the winter months of 2010. At the start of the construction phase fire rated temporary hoardings were installed by Livis to segregate the works from the station and enable 24hr working on the new station areas. Behind the hoardings substantial temporary works were required to prop the existing station roof to allow the installation of the new steel frame building which required delicately planned lifting operations. As part of the communications installation, extensive cable management systems were installed throughout the existing station in what proved to be an extremely challenging environment. The Station operations room and associated mess room required new electrical, mechanical and fire systems to be installed which integrated with the existing systems. Delays on the Civils and Building works due to the severe weather over the 2010 winter period meant that the key services had to be installed within an extremely reduced timescale which required space management on site to ensure that the access provided was safe and works were as efficient as possible. |
