Design and Build
Piccadilly Circus station was opened on 10th March 1906 by the Bakers street and Waterloo Railway (now the Bakerloo line) with the platforms of the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway Great Northern, (now the Piccadilly line) being opened on 15th December 1906.
Livis were engaged to oversee the removal of an existing steel spiral staircase and existing electrical lighting at Piccadilly Circus Station. Works involved the engagement of specialist contractors to carryout surveys of the existing staircase and shaft, the design, strip out and installation of new steel spiral stairs, shaft cladding and mechanical and electrical works to the centre section of the stair shaft. Additional independent scaffolding was erected and dismantled in sequence for both the strip out and reconstruction of the stairs.
Initial works involved the construction of 3 no steel panelled hoardings with secure doors and smoke seals to ensure no dusty operations within the shaft impeded on the air quality within public areas of the station. Steelwork contractor carried out a full dimensional survey of the existing staircase and shaft and re-design of the steel stair treads and risers, and shaft with new curved cladding panels and handrails.
The Electrical and Mechanical Contractor carried out surveys of the existing services and the reinstallation of new conduits, lighting units and small elements of power upgrades along with temporary relocation of several air conditioning units sited within the shaft.
Livis carried out breakout works to the existing concrete lining for new steelwork pad stones and fixing locations, builder’s works for relocated drainage channel along with management supervision for safety, progress, client liaison and costings.
Following approval of the design, the steelwork contractor and scaffold contractor worked hand in hand for the removal of existing stairs and preparation for the reinstallation of new spiral stair treads and risers. These elements of works required complex scaffold works to maintain full safety of operatives and any visitors to the works area.
The spiral staircase was rebuilt from bottom up, with scaffold being struck as works progressed followed by installation of new external wall and inner void white cladding panels and handrails. The staircase was also upgraded during the works to be DDA compliant. New electrical services and lights were installed and existing air conditioning units repositioned to new locations.
